Practice Info/FAQ’s

Dr. Wolfer sees patient with spine, sports medicine and general orthopedic problems. Dr. Wolfer uses an integrative medicine approach to common orthopedic problems, which combines the best of traditional and integrative orthopedic medicine. (Please read the ABOUT page for details about Dr. Wolfer’s training and expertise).

In the 60 minute consultation, Dr. Wolfer will obtain an in-depth history, physical exam, will review labs and x-rays/MRIs. Additional testing or updated imaging may be ordered. A treatment plan will be formulated and follow up.

The physical exam is focused on finding reversible causes of musculoskeletal pain, as well as uncovering any old injury patterns which may be worsening the current pain condition. Using advanced functional and sports medicine physical exam techniques Dr. Wolfer will also focus on uncovering any old injuries or maladaptive patterns which may be worsening the current pain condition.

The focus of the visit is to address your primary concerns about your pain condition. Next, as a team, a treatment plan will be formulated. For some patients, a referral to physical therapy, massage therapy, osteopathy, acupuncture or chiropractic will solve many problems. Many patients with longstanding problems require a team of integrative health providers.

For appropriate patients, Dr. Wolfer performs Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT). RIT includes Biopuncture, Neural Prolotherapy, Prolotherapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma. (These treatments are described in more details on the website). To find out if you are a candidate for one of these treatments, an in-person consultation is required.

At least half of patients with ongoing musculoskeletal problems such as spinal pain, joint pain, recurrent tendonitis etc are typically found to have lifestyle factors which are adversely impacting their bodies ability to heal. These lifestyle factors can be effectively treated with a personalized functional medicine prescription which includes: an anti-inflammatory diet, restorative sleep, movement, stress management and supplements/bioidentical hormones.

Dr. Wolfer’s Functional Medicine Programs include the Women’s and Men’s Wellness Programs, the Healthy Aging Program and the Athlete’s Choice Program. (Please see description of Functional Medicine Programs for details of conditions treated).

Dr. Wolfer offers a Comprehensive Functional Medicine Assessment in a 60 minute new patient consultation.

Your assessment will include an in-depth look at medical history, family history, diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep. Patients are also encouraged to bring a copy of any recent labs.

At the end of your new patient consultation, additional personalized testing is typically recommended, personalized to your primary issues. Such testing may include nutritional deficiencies, genetics, hormonal issues (adrenal, thyroid, progesterone, estrogen, testosterone etc.), and gastrointestinal issues. Follow up visits are scheduled to review any additional testing required. Most patients require two follow up visits, the first appointment to review any additional or updated lab tests and the second appointment to review specialized functional medicine testing inducing: saliva adrenal stress profile (cortisol testing), gut analysis and metabolism testing.

New patient consultations are $400.00

Follow up visits are $200.00 (*If additional time is needed visits are pro-rated in 15-minute increments, at $50/15 minutes).

Regenerative Injection Therapy:   the cost of the injection therapy depends on which therapy is indicated for your condition. Your doctor will let you know the cost at the time of consultation.

Payment is by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, and Discover), check or cash. Payment is due at the time of service. At the time your initial appointment is scheduled, we will request a credit card to hold the appointment time for you. See below for fees for missed or cancelled appointments. Your credit card will be stored encrypted for your protection.

Dr. Wolfer does not accept insurance but can provide you with a superbill to send to your insurance company.  Dr. Wolfer is an out-of-network provider.  Often the insurance company will pay 50-80% of the cost of the visit.  Payment in full is due at the time of service.  The insurance company will then re-imburse you directly.

The focus of your visits is quality time with the doctor to address root causes of pain and illness and to maximize wellness. Disappointed with the restrictions, bureaucracy and limited time she could spend with her patients in our current health care model, Dr. Wolfer opted for the new paradigm in integrative and functional medicine which values high-quality patient-doctor relationships, meaningful results and lifestyle transformation. This is not the “pill for every ill” typical insurance practice where the doctor can only spend 10 minutes a visit.

Please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early to your appointment. Make sure you leave adequate time for parking or taking BART as well as locating the office. If you do arrive late for your appointment, we will still need to end at the scheduled time. The charge for the appointment remains the same.

New patient appointments must be cancelled 7 business days in advance. Follow up appointments require 72 hour notice. Business days are Monday through Friday and do not include holidays. The new patient cancellation fee is $200; follow-up office visit cancellation fee is $100. Cancellations of procedure visits require 72 hours notice with full cost of visit charged to your credit card.  Your credit card number will be kept securely on file. If appropriate notice is not given, we reserve the right to charge your credit card on file.
