ABOUT LEE WOLFER MD, MS, FABPMR
Dr. Wolfer is one of a select few doctors in the United States who is Board-Certified in three specialties: Sports Medicine, Integrative Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She received her MD from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She also obtained a Master’s Degree (MS) in Health & Medical Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) with a thesis on the intersection of art, health and social change. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School. While in Boston, Dr. Wolfer worked tirelessly to make the Charles River accessible to people with disabilities. As a consequence of her distinguished community service, she was chosen, out of over 500 fellow medical residents, to receive Harvard Medical School’s highest award bestowed for community service: The Dean’s Award. While at Harvard she also received her Medical Certification in Acupuncture. After residency she completed 2 additional Fellowships: the #1 ranked Spine and Sports Medicine Fellowship in the US with Joel Press, MD at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and, the Interventional Spine Fellowship with Richard Derby, MD at Spinal Diagnostics in Daly City, CA. Dr. Wolfer has published and lectured extensively on orthopedic medicine and functional medicine.
Despite receiving excellent traditional training, she knew something was missing and began pursuing integrative medical solutions to sports and spine problems. She knew there had to be more than ibuprofen, steroid shots and surgery to sports medicine! This led to extensive training in Regenerative Injection Therapies (RIT) which used natural substances such as Traumeel (containing Arnica), glucose and/or the body’s own platelets to heal injuries. RIT therapies include: Biopuncture, Prolotherapy, Neuroprolotherapy and Platelet-Rich Plasma. Her successes with these therapies led to Tim Ferriss, author of the 4-Hour Body and 4-Hour Work week, seeking her treatments and finding relief from chronic shoulder pain. Tim Ferriss then featured her prominently in the 4-Hour Body. Dr. Wolfer was next invited to appear on the Dr. Oz show to demonstrate Biopuncture, a botanical injection therapy from Europe, used for orthopedic and pain problems.

However, despite advances in integrative orthopedics, something was still missing, so Dr. Wolfer dug deeper into why some patients were injury-prone or had trouble healing. Ten years ago, she began studying Functional and Integrative Medicine. Her study co-incided with her search for recovery from a severe stress fracture which her doctors felt needed surgery. At the time of her injury, Dr. Wolfer, had over-trained in yoga. Dr. Wolfer was also burning the candle at both ends AND the midnight oil! While raising a young daughter, trying to be “super-mom†in every way. Not unlike Dr. Wolfer, many patients are in need of a “lifestyle makeover,†which identifies the root causes of problems and focuses treatment on a matrix of modalities to achieve wellness including: diet (nutrient-dense, paleo, gluten-free), movement, adequate sleep, stress management and supplements/bio-identical hormones. She has taken extensive coursework from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), Institute for Functional Medicine and WorldLink Medical. She is certified to prescribe bio-identical hormones from Worldlink Medical. She is a current student of the Kalish Method. Based on extensive Functional Medicine training, evolutionary biology and ancestral wisdom, Dr. Wolfer uses a “Lifestyle Matrix†to develop a personalized program for each patient using food, movement, sleep, stress management and supplements/bio-identical hormones.
