Lee Wolfer MD, Biopuncture, Prolotherapy in Ferriss’ 4 Hour Body

The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming SuperhumanTimothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour-Workweek, has released his newest book, The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman, currently the NY Times #1 Bestseller.

“You — Tim Ferriss — can do more outside the system than inside it.”

In his new book, Tim recounts how he consulted me about of his chronic shoulder and achilles heel pain and I how I cured him of both, using a combination of Biopuncture and Prolotherapy, both Regenerative Injection Therapies which stimulate the bodies naturally healing abilities while avoiding the use of anti-inflammatory steroids typically used in orthopedics.

From the website, www.arthritistoday.com, a new goverment report was released on October 7, 2010, showing that the number of Americans with joint pain is now one in ten.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reports that now 50 million Americans have joint pain, and the figure is rising.  One of the concerns raised by the report is that people are limiting their everyday activities — recreation, shopping, playing with their kids, etc.  Overall, the general medical establishment can only offer the same old prescription of exercise, steroid injections, weight loss, activity modification and surgery.  Recently, another alternative has been recognized.

After his astounding success with The 4-Hour-Workweek, now in its second edition, published in 35 countries, Tim set off on his true passion — health, wellness and performance.  In addition to improving his physique, nutrition, libido and so forth, he worked to reverse multiple chronic muscle and joint pains sustained over a lifetime of high level sports.  He states, “I had become a very curious man in June 2009 out of pain and desperation.  The question I had in my mind was extreme:  what would happen if I tried to reverse a lifetime of injuries and physical abuse in 14 days?”  From the financial and PR success of the 4 Hour Work Week, Tim had no financial constraints and had “…access to the doctors and drugs of Olympic and professional athletes.”  Tim came to my office for consultation and treatment.

Description of treatment

Out of a laundry list of more than 30-40 treatments Tim tried, he identied several which achieved a cure.  Biopuncture and Prolotherapy were 2 of those treatments.  I performed superficial micro-injections with natural agents (Traumeel) and prolotherapy (glucose and saline).

Quotes from the book:

“The results of the dozens of ‘baby jabs’ with a small 30-gauge one-half inch needle wer amazing.  Twelve hours after the first treatment of both infraspinatus muscles I had zero pain at the rear of either shoulder.  I had suffered through persistent pain and soreness at the back of both shoulders for more than six years, and one 15 minute sessions fixed both of them.  To date, no pain has returned.  The Biopuncture was repeated for the right Achilles tendon, with similar results.”

Tim also sought treatment for various spinal pain problems and after his worldwide travels identified me as

“…one of the foremost back and spinal specialists in the United States.”

Due to Tim’s busy schedule, we were only able to do 1-2 treatments of his back.  Given the significant pain in this region, more than one treatment would have been needed to make a meaningful difference.  Depending on the cause, spinal pain can often be improved markedly with a session of 6-8 treatments.  Factors such as underlying health issuess (anemia, diabetes, cancer), whiplash or prior surgeries slow down treatment milestones.

To know if a patient is a good candidate for a regenerative injection therapy — a complete history, physical exam, and review of imaging (x-rays, MRIs) is needed.  As a physician, I am thankful that doctors and patients finally have a treatment option to cortisone injections vs. surgery.  Ten years ago when I trained at Harvard for my residency, none of these methods were taught, now they are part of MD training.  To read more about these treatments in detail see the Regenerative Injection Therapy page for answers to frequently asked questions.
