BPA and methylparaben interfere with breast cancer drugs

Researchers at San Francisco’s California Pacific Medical Center, led by Dr. William Goodson, exposed non-cancerous cells (from women at high risk for breast cancer) to BPA and methylparaben.  BPA is used to harden plastic and is ubiquitous.  BPA is found in plastic food containers and cans.  Currently, the California legislature is working on a bill to ban BPA from the lining of cans of infant formula and “sippy cups.”  Recently, the Environmental Working Group found BPA in extremely high doses in sales receipts.  Methylparaben is a preservative used in cosmetics, sunscreen and other personal care products.  In Goodson’s study, once the non-cancerous cells were exposed to these chemicals they began to behave like cancerous cells.  When Tamoxifen, a drug used to treat breast cancer, was added to the cell cultures it was unable to block cancerous growth.  Normally, Tamoxifen would cause the cells to slow or stop their growth and die, but in the presence of BPA and methylparaben, Tamoxifen was ineffective.  One of the concerns is that these chemicals may trigger cancer in high risk patients.  For those interested on finding out more about the research on BPA and methylparaben, visit the website of the Environmental Working Group www.ewg.org.

SF physician weighs in on biopuncture

Special to The Examiner

Photo of Dr. Lee WolferLee Wolfer is a physician who practices spine and sports medicine in San Francisco at the Chiro-Medical Group, her private practice, and in Daly City at the Spinal Diagnostics and Treatments Center. She recently appeared on the “Dr. Oz Show” as an expert on biopuncture.

What is biopuncture? It is a new European injection-based treatment using botanical remedies as well as glucose to treat pain and inflammation for common problems such as sprains and strains, joint and spinal pain, tendonitis, and shoulder and nerve pain.

When should biopuncture be recommended? It is a safe, effective tool to fight pain and can be used with conventional methods of treatment or when they fall short.

What is the goal of biopuncture? Conventional medicines often suppress your symptoms and may or may not work, and you have to take high doses for long periods of time. Biopuncture’s goal is to inject small microdoses of medicines, which wake up the body’s own natural healing process. It is not a stand-alone treatment. Patients need to eat well and exercise, but it is a safe, effective new tool.
